People and selfies

Have already met some amazing, smiley, colourful and interesting people, and it is only the beginning. Krishna (black and white photo) was drawing by the seaside promenade in Chennai and gave us the dog picture below. The family of three on the bench were our fellow passengers on the train from Puducherry to Thanjavur.

Pondicherry

Pondicherry or Puducherry was a welcome change with a little bit of luxury. We enjoyed staying at Hotel de L’Orient, an old mansion in the ‘French’ quarter of the town, having strong coffee and croissants. The Pongal festival was still on and people decorate their homes with banana leaves and sugar cane, even struggling to take them home by scooter, see below.

Pongal

Pongal is a harvest festival mainly celebrated in Tamil Nadu which last for four days. On the eve of the first day all homes create elaborate and colourful designs outside their front doors made with salt and coloured powder. It truly makes a beautiful sight and brightens up the streets.

We started our travels in India with a string of temple towns in Tamil Nadu; Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli and Madurai. Kept it light and did not get ‘templed out’. Had to save some for Sri Lanka!

Enjoyed the whole range of South India meals in local restaurants … which are called ‘hotels’, just to confuse unsuspecting tourists!
